Combating loneliness

HURLEYVILLE, NY — As part of its annual meeting, Sullivan County’s Office for the Aging (OFA) will present a free local screening of “All the Lonely People,” a film examining the epidemic of loneliness.

The in-person screening is free and open to the public on Tuesday, November 1 at 2 p.m. at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Center. The afternoon includes a Q&A with the film’s producers and local officials.

Why is this important? In 2017, the U.S. Surgeon General declared social isolation to be a “global epidemic”—one that has only worsened during the COVID-19 health emergency. “All the Lonely People” examines this epidemic on a deeply personal level, an OFA spokesperson said.

The event is part of a statewide screening tour organized by the New York State Office for the Aging, the Association on Aging in New York, and locally by the OFA and by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County.

“We are very fortunate to have an opportunity to have a local screening of this powerful documentary. It highlights how the epidemic of social isolation affects not just our aging population, but all across our community,” said OFA director Lise-Anne Deoul in a press release.

The center is located at 219 Main St.

For more information and to register, call the OFA at 845/807-0241.
