LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — From Bulldog to Buccaneer; that’s the short story of Gavin Hauschild’s football career at Sullivan West High School.
On February 10, the high school library was packed as his coaches, family and fellow students showed up to watch him as he signed a letter of intent to attend the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, MA. There, Hauschild will join the Buccaneers football program as a NCAA Division III scholar-athlete.
Dave Eggleton, Sullivan West’s athletic director, introduced the in-person and Zoom meeting with a few words about the three-sport scholar-athlete.
“Gavin has been a member of the Sullivan West football program for six years, and on the varsity team for four years. He has earned the title of captain, and has played a variety of positions on offense, defense and special teams.”
In 2021, the Bulldogs squad garnered the OCIAA 8-Man Division championship, earned the number-one seed going into the playoffs, and competed in the Section IX 8-Man championship title game.
When it came to basketball, “He has been an integral part of the Sullivan West program for six years... a starter on the varsity team for two seasons,” and played a variety of positions.
In addition, Hauschild volunteers his time with the Callicoon Youth Basketball program as a mentor in the fundamentals of hoops for elementary kids.
Eggleton also praised his baseball accomplishments and added that the senior is “a great role model for our younger Bulldogs... we thank him for his service to our community and school district.”
Hauschild plans to study emergency management. Why? “My dad does it, and I want to follow in his footsteps. He’s there for me, and I want to be there for my kids.”
“I think it’s awesome; I’m so proud of Gavin,” John Hauschild said. “He’s worked so hard, starting when he was in Red Dog football. I can’t wait to watch him at the next level. It’s a real proud Dad moment!”
