CALLICOON CENTER, NY — The tornado that hit Sullivan County over the weekend has already brought the community together to repair its damage.

The tornado touched down on Saturday, April 22, at 6:38 p.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS). It touched down north of Jeffersonville, along Callicoon Center Road, and moved north, passing through Roscoe and lifting off at 7:00 p.m. as it moved into Rockland. Damage rated between EF 0 (winds 65 to 85 mph) and EF 2 (winds 111 to 135 mph).

Damage from the tornado included minor structural damage including damage to skylights and interior walls, extensive tree blowdowns and damage to historic barns and the collapse of an 180 foot truss tower on Hahn Road, according to the NWS.

“We want to thank Sullivan County Emergency Management, members of the volunteer fire departments in Roscoe and Callicoon Center, New York State Office of Emergency Management and local residents,” wrote the NWS.

The worst damage (according to the NWS) occurred along Hahn Road in Callicoon Center. Apple Pond Farm received extensive damage, with reports indicating damage to the barn, extensive tree debris and a loss of power. The local community has rallied to help the farm recover. According to Michael Chojnicki, approximately 25 people went to the farm bringing meals and clearing debris, and while the wind turbine was damaged in the storm, the house remained intact. The community has raised $24,000 of a $50,000 gofundme goal by Monday, April 24 (available at gofundme.com/f/apple-pond-farm).

Hilly Acres Farm in Jeffersonville received damage as well; reports indicate that the farm lost a fence line and trees.
