EFERSONVILLE, NY — In softball, there’s a classic chant from the bench that rewards a hitter for not swinging on a pitch ruled a ball; a pitch way out of the strike zone that goes something like, “Good eye, Good eye!”. In its purest form, it includes “Way to watch that ball go byeye!”.

And that was on full display when the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (10-6) took on the Lady Lions Chapel Field Christian Schools (6-4) in a home stand varsity softball matchup on Monday, May 13.

Backing up a bit: the Lady Bulldogs earned a berth in the upcoming sectionals by defeating the Lady Comets of Fallsburg 19-1 on Thursday, May 9.

But wait, there’s more to the game. On Monday afternoon, the home team defeated the visitors 5-2.

Sullivan West, coached by Anthony Durkin, scored a run in the bottom of the first frame, while the Lady Lions roared to life in the top of the second, sending two runners across the plate to take a 2-1 lead.

The game remained scoreless in the next two innings, until the fifth and sixth frames. At that point, the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in both frames, taking the brass ring for the afternoon’s outing.

Posting runs for Sullivan West: second baseman Sam Hellerer, catcher Nicole Reeves, center fielder Kaitlyn Drobysh, right fielder Mckala Chevalier and Mary Chellis, pitcher.

Crossing the plate to Chapel Field, coached by Bill Spanjer: Kelly Monahan, second base, and Alana Venetis, first base.

For the home team, freshman hurler Chellis pitched for seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs. On the opposite side of the playing field, Chapel Field’s Emma Spanger yielded six hits and five runs in six frames.

After the game, Sullivan West’s three seniors were honored with an on-field ceremony in recognition of their dedication to the high school sport of softball. See the accompanying story below.
