LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The Bulldog boys’ varsity booters wrapped up the 2021 season of soccer with a 2-5 overall record, and were 0-0 in league competition.
They were coached by Kristina Verrico, and assisted by Scott Scardino.
Junior goalie Will Nearing averaged 15 saves per game, not bad for a junior starter, and according to Coach Verrico, several goals during the season were scored by first-time varsity players, including Landon Boyd, Charlie Kutschera, Danny Shami and Aoleces Jiminez, as well as veterans Tariq Gambari and Dom Perez.
“Dylan Sager had a huge presence on the field and has been an integral part of our defense for the past few years. He is also a leader on and off the field, taking the younger defensive players under his wing,” said Verrico of the senior booter, who was just named Most Valuable Player.
Dominic Perez was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, and his coach had a few words of praise for a player who marked his first year on the defensive side of the field.
“Multiple coaches and even referees marveled at Dom Perez’s skill in the defensive end,” she said, adding, “He would come out seemingly from nowhere to stop the opposition’s attack… being a defender did not stop him from getting up top as well, and he even scored the game winning goal in our senior night game.”
