MONTICELLO, NY — Sullivan County International Airport was awarded $144,000 recently through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Sullivan is one of nine upstate airports to receive $3.5 million in federal funding, which will be used to upgrade control towers, install air traffic control systems, improve airport communications, construct remote towers, and update other infrastructure, says U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY 19). He serves on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, which is tasked with overseeing the rollout of the instructure act.
“This funding will support important infrastructure improvements to ensure our local airports remain competitive and continue to meet the needs of travelers,” said Molinaro on Nov. 28 when announcing the funds.
Meanwhile, the 8,000-square-foot John J.J. McGough Terminal and its detached utilities buildings at Sullivan County International Airport will be razed to make way for a new 12,000-square-foot terminal. The airport will remain open during construction, with the new terminal scheduled for completion in May 2025.
The project will cost $24 million, with $18.5 million of that sum to come from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Upstate Airport Development & Revitalization Program, and an additional $4 million from the county.
The two-story facility will have a mezzanine, outdoor deck, and rentable office space. An additional $4 million of county funding will contribute to the project.
In October, the county struck a labor agreement with Hudson Valley Building & Construction Trades Council for the terminal construction.
