Public comment on endangered species regs now open

ALBANY, NY — The public comment period for threatened and endangered species draft regulations in New York State is now underway until July 16.

No substantial changes to existing threatened and endangered species protections are included in the rulemaking, says the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

A court ruling removed certain regulations related to endangered and threatened species. Now, the proposal aims to bring back those rules.

The proposal reissues all the endangered and threatened species regulations that existed before the 2022 court decision and allows for public comment and a public hearing to discuss these regulations.

The goal is to restore the rules to their previous state. The proposal doesn’t make any big changes but only updates the dates mentioned in the regulations to match the most recent federal publications.

Comments must be submitted in writing to wildliferegs@dec.ny.gov (subject: “Repromulgation”) or to: NYSDEC, Attn: Dan Rosenblatt, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754.
