Pickleball court coming to Wayne County

WHITE MILLS, PA — It’s a hot topic on local forums. The New Yorker has written about it. It might be the fastest-growing sport in America.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong, creating an odd love child of a game that’s a favorite of senior citizens, small children and everyone in between.

But never mind the description. Here’s what you need to know: a new pickleball court is coming to the area—and it’s indoors.

Dropshots Pickleball will open in the Sports Factory of NEPA in October, and the people behind it, Christine and Matt Davis, are spreading the word now.

Don’t worry, they say. Come winter, you can still play pickleball, and you can play it indoors in a climate-controlled court. (Which, Christine pointed out, helps on hot days too.)

Christine’s aunt got them playing. She’s “been addicted to pickleball for a few years now… and pushed us to play,” Christine said.

And once Matt and Christine started, they caught the bug too. “At the court in Honesdale, we met people we wouldn’t have met otherwise, and all through the game,” she said. “People of all ages can play. People of all athletic types can compete.”

“It’s great for people with mobility issues,” Matt said. Senior citizens play it and can compete; a 64-year-old grandmother in Pittsburgh recently beat a couple of Pittsburgh Steelers at the game.

And “it’s easy to learn… people can walk in” and start playing. “It really is addictive,” Christine said.

When the chance to have a court at the Sports Factory opened, the couple jumped at the chance. It’ll open on Saturday, October 15, and the grand opening will be held on Saturday, October 29, with a Halloween theme, Christine said.

They’re planning league nights, group classes, a clinic—all ways to encourage people to improve their game and move their bodies.

“We want to be a place where people can have fun and progress,” Matt said.
