LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY – On February 21, the home team Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West faced off against the Fallsburg Lady Comets in a girls’ varsity game of hoops that marked the final contest in the regular season of buckets for both teams.

At the closing buzzer, the visitors closed out their season, while Sullivan West advanced to the sectionals, as they romped over Fallsburg 54-19.

Although the home team got off to a rather slow beginning in the first frame, they settled down to out-score the opposition in all four periods: 6-2, 15-6, 22-2 and 11-9.

The Lady Bulldogs’ big scorers:

Abby Parucki (22 points, including 6 three-pointers); Karlee Diehl (16); and Nicole Reeves (9 points, all three-pointers).

Fallsburg’s top guns:

Marilyn Santos (7), Maya Ballard (4), and Jennifer Pena Fuentes (4).

Stats from the free throw line:

SW 3/14 (21 percent), FCS 3/7 (43 percent).

“It was a rebuilding season,” said Michael Ballard, now in his fourth year as coach of Lady Comets. “We had four seniors, plus underclassmen.”

The Lady Comets (4-17) were led on the hardwood by three captains: Emily Perna, Jennifer Pena Fuentes and Jordan Batista.

And of the game against the Lady Bulldogs, Coach Ballard said, “Sullivan West started off great… They’ve got five great shooters.”

With his eye on the upcoming sectionals, Pat Donovan, helmsman of the Lady Bulldogs bucketeers (15-5), said of the regular season, “It was a great season, and the girls rose to the occasion every single night.

“We don’t have a lot of kids, as we only have eight on the team, but it’s a tough bunch and everybody steps up and everybody contributes,” said Coach Donovan.
