NY veterans and Gold Star families can now visit state parks for free

ALBANY, NY — Beginning April 1, New York State veterans and Gold Star families will have free access to state parks through the expanded Lifetime Liberty Pass Program. A disability rating is no longer required.

They will have free vehicle entry to state-operated campgrounds, day-use areas, boat launches, historic sites, arboretums, swimming pools, and park preserves. The greens fees at state park-operated golf courses will also be waived.

Veterans and Gold Star families will also receive discounted campsite and cabin rentals at state parks.

To access these benefits, veterans should present park staff with an NYS Department of Motor Vehicles photo ID with the veteran status designation. Veterans who do not have this designation can visit the DMV website for more information or apply for the free Lifetime Liberty Pass to ensure seamless entry.

Gold Star parents, spouses or children should apply for the free Lifetime Liberty Pass to ensure entry at all park locations.

The expanded program is part of a package of legislation supporting veterans that Governor Kathy Hochul signed in November 2023.

“Our veterans have made endless sacrifices, and New York is always looking for ways we can say thank you for keeping our country safe,” Governor Hochul said. “Nature heals, and with the expansion of our Lifetime Liberty Pass Program, we’re ensuring veterans and their families can easily visit our world-class destinations here in New York.”
