ALBANY, NY — The terms “feminine hygiene” and “sanitary napkins” will no longer be mentioned in New York law. 

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation this month that changes those terms to “menstrual products.”

“Outdated terminology perpetuates stigma surrounding menstruation, which ultimately discourages conversations that enable access to basic resources,” said state Sen. Roxanne J. Persaud (D), the bill’s co-sponsor, in a statement. “This bill recognizes the simple reality that menstruation is not dirty, but rather a natural bodily function. In so doing, we take another step in lifting the stigma, combating period poverty, and ensuring equal dignity for all individuals who menstruate throughout New York.”

Another bill signed into law requires menstrual products to be provided for free to students in New York private schools.
