Paul Novak has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Catherine, on December 13, 2008. The sentence was handed down on January 31.
Judge Frank LaBuda also denied a motion to have the verdict thrown out. Novak's attorney Gary Greenwald had argued that his client should receive a fair trial based on a technicality, because one of the doors in the court had been locked, or an officer of the court prevented people from entering the courtroom, during a portion of the proceedings, but LaBuda rejected that argument.
At the trial in September 2013, the star witness was Novak's girlfriend at the time of the murder, Michelle LaFrance, and she provided damming testimony about Novak's actions and his intent to kill his wife. Novak received $800,000 in proceeds from insurance policies, as well as custody of the couple's two children.
