Classic movies at PCHS

MILFORD, PA — The Pike County Historical Society’s (PCHS) Columns Museum continues its Dinner and a Creature Feature series with a 5 p.m. showing of “Them!” on Wednesday, December 28 at the Columns Museum.

The movie was first released in 1954. and will be shown at the Columns Museum.

“Them!”, according to a museum press release, is a landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants. It stars James Whitmore, James Arness and Edmund Gwenn.

The movie begins in New Mexico with a child wandering in shock, a ransacked general store and a battered corpse full of enough formic acid to kill 20 men. It ends with a lot of dead ants; there are also philosophical musings about the atomic age.

The museum is located at 608 Broad St.

Tickets cost $35 for members of the museum and $40 for non-members, and include a complimentary glass of wine, dessert and coffee. For reservations, call 570/296-8126 or email pikemuse@ptd.net.

STEAM in the library and much more at EBCPL

MONTICELLO, NY — The Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library (EBCPL) will hold a hands-on program called STEAM—described as part club and part class—for children between the ages of five and 11. It takes place at the library on Friday, December 30 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Each month, kids can explore a new project. Registration is required; to register, click on Events and then Youth Programs. See below.

There are activities for adults too. On Fridays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the EBCPL offers a group for people aged 21 and over, to spend an afternoon playing a variety of games. Participants are welcome to bring their own game if those provided don’t interest them.

Lighting the tallest menorah in Liberty

LIBERTY, NY — Chabad invites you to what it calls “the tallest menorah lighting,” held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 24 at the Shoprite Plaza Mall, located at 1955 State Rte. 52. The event includes live music by Shmuly Hurwitz. Mayor Joan Stoddard and town supervisor Frank DeMayo will be guests. There will be dancing, latkes and more.

Make art for the Tiny Art Show at the Fallsburg Library

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — The Fallsburg Library is hosting a winter tiny art show. Join the fun by stopping by the library for a mini-canvas and some clay—then make a mini-masterpiece.

Return your art by Friday, December 30 so it can be included in the display.

The show will take place in January, 2023.

‘New Works’ exhibit at the Ruffed Grouse

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Ruffed Grouse Gallery will exhibit the work of artist Terry Ekasala until Sunday, February 5, 2023.

It is titled “New Works.”

“From large to intimately scaled, Ekasala’s new portraits and dreamy abstractions twist, fold, bend, evaporate, and resurface as brilliantly orchestrated experiences of discovery,” according to a description from the gallery’s website about the exhibit.

The Ruffed Grouse describes itself as showcasing established artists, as well as less-recognized or previously unknown self-taught and contemporary artists, working in a variety of two-dimensional media and sculpture.

The gallery’s hours are Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment.

The gallery is located at 144 Main St.

Teens, come hang out at WSPL

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — The Jeffersonville branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library (WSPL) offers an hour for teens between the ages of 11 to 17 to unwind and hang out with friends. This month, it takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28.

Participants can play games, read books, make art and more.

The December hangout will include a special baking craft to test the branch’s BabyCakes cake-pop maker.

Light refreshments will be served.

The Jeffersonville branch is located at 19 Center St.

Open mic, trivia and more at Rafter’s Tavern

CALLICOON, NY — Rafter’s Tavern offers art, food, beer and music. It’s located at 28 Upper Main St. and is open from Thursday to Sunday.

Every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the tavern holds an open mic night hosted by Elizabeth Rose.

Every month, the tavern hosts a variety of live music from multiple local artists. It also hosts Crafters at Rafters, a creative group that gets together to work on creative projects.
