HURLEYVILLE, NY — It all started with a “team of one,” as last year the Homestead School Collaborative College High School (CCHS) joined Section IX of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) with a single runner named Bryce Shannon.

This season, Bryce’s mother Carla returned as head coach of the fledgling track and field squad, which now boasts six varsity-level competitors and eight or nine, depending on who shows up on any given day, modified student athletes.

On January 4, the Montessori-based school joined several other schools for a boys and girls varsity invitational track and field meet at SUNY Sullivan.

In the next edition of the River Reporter, “Talking Sports” will focus on the story behind the “New Kids on the Track,” an account of how the Homestead School CCHS track and field program got started and how it is evolving.
