Restricted-generation schedule for trout season

HAWLEY, PA — Brookfield Renewable will operate on its restricted-generation schedule at the Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Plant during spring trout season. The schedule starts on Sunday, April 2 and continues until Sunday, June 18. Generation of electricity will be suspended on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and three hours before and one hour after sunset on Fridays.

The modification of generation is to keep anglers safe on the Lackawaxen River, accommodating springtime fishing.

Be aware the schedule could change due to certain weather conditions and lake elevation maintenance.

The thermal-release program could still occur during this timeframe, given the applicable weather conditions that would warrant such a release.

For information on water levels, visit safewaters.com/facility/wallenpaupack.

No foolin’: Helena Pittman at Domesticities

YOUNGSVILLE, NY— Artist Helena Pittman returns to the gallery at Domesticities at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, exhibiting a selection of recent paintings.

Pittman’s return marks 10 years since her last exhibit at Domesticities.

“I knew at 14 I’d have to give my life to painting,” Pittman said. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “I stood in the room of Impressionist painters… blinded by the color and light those paintings threw… It felt like coming home.”

She works with the shape of the canvas board. “That shape is my window—the world to get working—until it seems to exist apart from me… I know when the painting is finished. I’ve climbed the steep mountain. It’s a moment of awe.”

Domesticities is located at 4055 State Rte. 52. The show will stay up through the month of April.

For more information, visit Domesticities on its Facebook page, Domesticities & the Cutting Garden.

DEC summer camp registration opens April 2

NEW YORK STATE — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will open online registration for its 2023 conservation-education summer camps program on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m.

The four residential camps will offer at least six one-week sessions (Sunday to Friday) beginning July 2, 2023, and are available for youth aged 11 to 17.

Parents and guardians should register early and complete the forms, which are available from the link below, since spaces fill up quickly, a DEC spokesperson said.

“DEC’s summer camps program has a long tradition of introducing youth to the outdoors through fun, hands-on, minds-on activities that create life-long connections to nature,” said DEC commissioner Basil Seggos. He called the camps a chance for children to unplug from their devices and “immerse themselves in the natural world.”

The DEC operates four residential camps for children: Camp DeBruce in Livingston Manor (Sullivan County), Camp Colby in Saranac Lake (Franklin County), Camp Rushford in Caneadea (Allegany County) and Camp Pack Forest in Warrensburg (Warren County).

Opening specific camps is dependent on staff availability.

Camp capacities will be reduced again this next year to provide the safest experience possible. New and returning individual campers will be limited to one week of camp.

Eligible campers who were unable to attend in 2022 due to camp closures will receive priority registration in 2023.

Information about individual camps and a complete schedule of camp opportunities for different age groups is available on the summer camps website at www.dec.ny.gov/education/2013.html.

The cost for one week of camp is $350, and includes meals, trips and a camp T-shirt.

Applications should be submitted through the online registration program. To apply, visit www.dec.ny.gov/education/29.html.

For more information, email EducationCamps@dec.ny.gov, visit NYS DEC Summer Camps on Facebook or write to DEC Camps, 3rd Floor, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-5256.

Save the date and join the celebration: Sullivan NAACP to host Juneteenth parade

MONTICELLO, NY — The holiday Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates June 19, 1865 in Galveston, TX, when Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army read federal orders announcing that all previously enslaved black people in Texas were free.

The Sullivan County NAACP is planning a parade and festival for Monday, June 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.

Organizers are looking for community partners to march. Ideally, they said, entries should represent every entity in the county. This could include—but is not limited to—schools, churches, local businesses, lawmakers, political candidates and government offices. All participants should have flags, posters, banners, colors and so on to represent Juneteenth.

Marchers will line up at 10 a.m. at the hall parking lot at 2 Pleasant St. The parade will march down Broadway and end at the Ted Strobele Recreation Center.

Immediately following the parade, a reception will be held—with refreshments and vendor tables—in the Ted Strobele courtyard from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

To confirm participation or for further information, call Jane Sorensen at 845/807-6332, or email jsorensen@k12mcsd.net.
