Wayne commissioners recognize dairy industry, make a sundae

HONESDALE, PA — In an annual June tradition, the Wayne County Commissioners recognized area dairy farmers and the contribution they make, both to the local economy and to the health of area residents.

They proclaimed June as Dairy Month and July as Ice Cream Month in Wayne County.

On hand representing area dairy farmers were members of the Wayne County Dairy Court: Dairy Princess Kenley Roberts, Lil Dairy Miss Everly Zablocky and Dairy Misses Zoe Tyler, Chloe Tyler, and Truly Zablocky. They presented the commissioners with a tray of cheese products from Calkins Creamery.

A milk toast was given by reigning PA State Alternate Dairy Princess Natalie Grumbine, who saluted the dedication, sacrifice and hard work required to bring dairy products to market—something people without rural roots might fail to realize.

“Here’s to the dairy princesses, who act as a voice for the hard-working farmers, who work diligently to learn the ins and outs of the dairy industry, who offer a kind face, a genuine smile and a soft hand,” Grumbine said. “We work hard to bridge the gap between consumers and farmers and have a passion to represent this amazing industry.”

Following the meeting, everyone gathered on the courthouse front lawn for the annual ice cream sundae competition. The commissioners, joined by recently crowned Miss Pennsylvania Miranda Moore, faced off the Dairy Miss team in a race to complete giant ice cream sundaes. The commissioners’ team prevailed this year.

The 25 gallons of ice cream, provided by Wahoo Ice Cream and sponsored by Allied Milk Producers, were served to 250 appreciative people.
