ELDRED, NY —History recounts the gladiator games of the ancient Roman republic and empire that lasted a millennium; high schools recognize the accomplishments of their scholar athletes every year.
While perhaps not remembered in intricate mosaics depicting martial combat between gladiators battling each other or ferocious beasts, local high school athletes are recognized at awards ceremonies, some at the conclusion of a season, others at the end of the school year.
On Tuesday, June 11, Eldred JuniorSenior High School held their annual varsity athletic banquet in the William “Coach” Werneke gymnasium, which was named in his honor after 30-some years coaching at the Home of the Yellowjackets.
The old gym, commonly known as “The Hive,” has a long history. One pennant up on the wall testifies to the boys’ basketball team of 1949 winning a league championship.
Fast forwarding a few decades, the varsity coaches of today announced their selections for Most Valuable Player (MVP) of their respective teams. After the seniors were called up to receive plaques, the coaches had their teams come forward for recognition and the announcement of the MVP’s for each team.
In the wake of the low-key pomp and circumstance ceremony, the selections for the outstanding female and male athletes of the year were announced, and the winners took center stage at the podium to address the assemblage.
Hailee Kolvenbach was named Eldred’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year; the three-season athlete’s accomplishments included participating in eight Section IX teams, being tabbed for the Third-Team All-Star Basketball team and serving as captain of her soccer and hoops squads.
“It feels great, there are no words for it,” Kolvenbach said after receiving the award. “It was an exciting moment.”
Anthony Roselli received the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award for participating in indoor and outdoor track, soccer and cross county. His reaction to the prestigious award?“It’s amazing… All the hard work and miles I put in to get this, made it worth it.”
