Fly tying for beginners

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — On Sunday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join Secretary of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Nicole March for a morning of fly tying in the Wulff Gallery at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. This three-hour class will focus on fly tying for the absolute beginner; no previous fly-tying experience is required. A second date of Sunday, December 6 is also available for this class.

After a brief discussion on fly tying, as well as a few examples of the fly versus the naturals we often try to imitate, participants will begin with some basic techniques and tie up a few fly patterns that they can take home.

All materials included. The cost of this class is $45 for non-members and $40 for members. The class is limited to eight people; it is held indoors and masks are required.

CCE to host ‘Growing Resilience’ webinars

ONLINE — The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware and Orange Counties are joining together to offer a series of webinars addressing resilience as a response to the big challenges community members are facing in these unusual times.

The series was launched in early October with “Growing Resilience Individually” and will continue with a session on “Growing Resilience as a Community” on Thursday, November 19. This webinar will feature a group of panelists who will discuss the steps and process they engaged in to develop community resilience initiatives. Participants will then have the opportunity to identify possible steps they can take in their respective communities.

The final part of this series will be a virtual conference that focuses on “Tools for Growing Resilience” in schools, health and human services, and the community at large. The final session(s) will be held on Tuesday, December 8 and Wednesday, December 9.

Hunt for history

MILFORD, PA — The Pike County Historical Society has announced a fun-filled and educational way to engage in the history of the area: a scavenger hunt with questions and riddles answered by investigating the village of Milford, the grounds of Grey Towers, Milford Cemetery and Firefly Park in Matamoras. The hunt can be completed at your leisure; the deadline for all answer sheets, and a few pictures, is Thursday, December 17, by email or in-person.

The entry fee for this event is $25 and includes your very own Lincoln bobble head doll—your key to the contest, as the hunt requires pictures of Lincoln at various locations within the hunt.

All entries submitted by the deadline, with all questions and tasks completed correctly, will qualify for a grand prize raffle with first place being a private tour of our collections and dinner for four served in the Lincoln Room of the Columns Museum on a date of your choice. Second place is two Columns “Artifact” t-shirts. And third place is four passes to the museum, good for one year.

Comedy from the SCDW

4-H Fall Harvest Roundup a success

HONESDALE, PA — Although it ran differently in years past, the October 10 Wayne County 4-H Fall Harvest Roundup was a success. Hosted at the Park Street Complex, the fall roundup not only showcased pumpkin, onion, potato and meat bird project exhibitors, but it also served as a final roundup for 4-H programs this year.

More than 40 members and their families attended the event to view the projects displayed. They also picked up awards and prizes, dropped off donations and enjoyed a socially distanced event with other members.

DHC to host photo contest exhibit

MILFORD, PA — Through summer 2020, the Delaware Highlands Conservancy (DHC) held its third annual juried photo contest, “Nature Heals: Restore, Renew, Reconnect” and announced the winners late September.

From Thursday, November 12 to Monday, December 7, the ARTery Gallery, located in the historic Forest Hall building at 210 Broad St., will host an exhibition featuring the winning photographs as well as artwork created by the gallery’s member artists.

Gallery hours are Monday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
