Drive defensively, join a penny social and more

Posted

There are lots of things happening in our community and beyond in the month of October. Have a look at a few of the events, and support local.

On Saturday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the EEA Security Services’ community training center will hold its National Traffic Safety Institute (NTSI) six-hour defensive driving class at the Liberty Mall, 15 Sullivan Ave., Ste. 4.

This class gives you a reduction of four penalty points, and a 10-percent discount on your auto insurance for three years.

The course fee is $45, payable in cash or by money order on the day of the class.

Call to reserve your seat at 845/292-0999. The class is open to the public. Most drivers could save an average of $500 on their auto insurance.

There will be a penny social on Saturday, October 15 at the Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church (Route 116, Lake Huntington, NY). Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and calling starts at 12:30. Hot dogs, sauerkraut and beverages are available for purchase after the calling. The entry fee is $1. The penny social is sponsored by the Ladies Aid Society. If you have questions, call Vicky Krauss at 845/932-8923.

Also on October 15, the Cacklin’ Hen, located at 4054 State Rte. 52, Youngsville, NY, will host a fall fest from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $12; this includes picking pumpkins, painting pumpkins, face painting, arts and crafts, music and games in a family-friendly event. Tickets can be purchased at the Cacklin’ Hen.

The Cochecton Youth Group is still looking for volunteers in our community to decorate a trunk and hand out treats during its fall event on Saturday, October 29 at 11 a.m. The event is open to children who live in the Town of Cochecton and only to those who have pre-registered.

However, you do not need to have children who are participating in order to hand out goodies. If you are interested in helping to make the event successful, and would love to see Cochecton youth dressed up in their Halloween costumes, contact Heather Neidert at 845/796-6976 or email heatherneidert@me.com.

A capital project vote for the Sullivan West Central School District will take place on Wednesday, October 19 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at the polling locations in Jeffersonville, Narrowsburg and Callicoon. For more details on what is included in the proposed capital project, consult the school website at www.swcsd.org.

If you have a local business that you would like to have spotlighted in an upcoming column, get in touch. Email jenn@jennpowelldesigns.com with any news, events and happenings.
