Seeking nominations for ‘Do 6’ awards

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — The PA Route 6 Alliance is now accepting nominations for the “Do 6” Awards to be presented at the annual meeting in May.

 The awards are presented to individuals, businesses or organizations that have undertaken outstanding efforts that give new meaning to “Do 6” by supporting and implementing sustainable tourism development along the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor. The award winners exemplify the mission of the PA Route 6 Alliance to protect, preserve and promote the scenic, cultural, historical and recreational resources in the northern tier.

 The awards are presented in the areas of Heritage Partnerships, Leadership, Heritage Community of the Year, Heritage Tourism (projects or events), Artisan of the Year and Lifetime Achievement.

 Nominations can be submitted by anyone along the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor and are due by Friday, March 13. Nomination forms and category descriptions are available at www.paroute6.com/annual-awards-program. Winners will be notified prior to the meeting.

Citizenship class openings

MONTICELLO, NY — The Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County has openings in its citizenship classes. In the past year, the volunteers have helped eight people become American Citizens.

Classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Literacy Center, 63 North St.

Take charge of your health: chronic disease 

MONTICELLO, NY — On Wednesday, February 26, Sullivan 180’s “Take Charge of Your Health” presents a question-and-answer session with local providers on ways to prevent and manage chronic diseases. 

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program beings at 6. Healthy refreshments will be served throughout. 

This event is free, so feel free to bring friends and family, but registration is required.

Alzheimer’s and communication

HONESDALE, PA — A free evening of “education and fellowship” on the topic of effective communication strategies for caregivers and patients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia will take place on Tuesday, February 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Park Street Complex. 

Representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Wayne County Area Agency on Aging and Wayne Memorial will facilitate the discussion with the aim of increasing awareness and access to quality dementia care in Wayne, Pike and surrounding counties. Participants will also catalog available resources and services and discuss met and unmet needs in these areas.

WSUL’s 42nd annual Heart-A-Thon

HARRIS, NY — Catskill Regional Medical Center announces the 42nd Annual 98.3 WSUL Heart-A-Thon presented by the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association, benefitting Catskill Regional Medical Center’s Cardio-Pulmonary Department. This year’s Heart-A-Thon will take place on Friday, February 21 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Woodland Wildlings Garden Café, located on the hospital’s ground floor.

The event will be broadcast live on 98.3 WSUL and will feature guest speakers, guest host segments with community leaders and personalities, information and tips about heart health and a variety of healthcare demonstrations. 

This year, all proceeds from the 42nd Annual 98.3 WSUL Heart-A-Thon will help subsidize the purchase of a new echocardiogram unit.

Submit the next Denizen

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Narrowsburg Union invites the public to submit a design for the public installation “the Denizen Series.” Denizen is defined as “an inhabitant of a particular place.” 

Your concept and theme could adorn the 18-foot tall, 30,000-pound bluestone figure, created by Wayne Holbert, that lives on the lawn of the Narrowsburg Union. You will not be responsible for facilitating the fabrication and installation of the design.

 Grow your own shiitake mushrooms

PORT JERVIS, NY — On Thursday, February 27 at 6 p.m., the Hub will host Orange County Master Gardener Joe Grigoire who will instruct attendees on how to grow their own shiitake mushrooms.

There is no charge for this program, but seating is limited. Registration is required.

Ecozone Discovery Room

DINGMANS FERRY, PA — On Sunday, February 23, the Pocono Environmental Education Center’s (PEEC) Ecozone Discovery Room will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. 

The indoor room offers hands-on educational opportunities; participants can climb into a bald eagle’s nest, crawl into a bat cave, explore a beaver lodge and dig in a fossil pit.

Admission costs $2 per person and is free for teachers with a school ID.
