Celebrating girl power

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we have featured images from the Woman Card Girl Power playing cards, which showcases and celebrates young women who have changed the world. Moving through the artist-drawn cards, each week we have featured 13 young women—all of whom were teenagers when they accomplished extraordinary feats. Many thanks to the Woman Cards for the opportunity to hold up these accomplishments and to share this thoughtful work and creativity.

Highlighting voices we don’t know about enriches us all.

Two: Kate Shelley—At only 15 years old, Kate Shelley risked her life during a dangerous Iowa thunderstorm to prevent a railroad disaster. When a bridge near her family farm collapsed, she braved the wind, rain and dark—at one point crawling across a rickety bridge over the Des Moines River with only lightning for illumination—to prevent the midnight express, which was carrying over 200 passengers, from derailing.

Big Joker: Shirley Temple—Shirley Temple-Black began acting at age three, captured international attention when she was only five years old, and retired from films when she was all of 22. She was Hollywood’s biggest star when she was only a child, and spent the rest of her life working in entertainment and public service. She ran for Congress as a Republican in 1967 and served as the U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia and to Ghana.

Small Joker: Quvenzhane Wallis—Best known for her role as Hushpuppy in “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Quvenzhane Wallis is an American actress and author. She is the first person born in the twenty-first century—and the youngest actress ever—to be nominated for an Oscar. Since then, she has authored several children’s books.

Zeb and Zach Wahl are a brother-and-sister duo who have been producing playing cards for the last eight years. Hand-drawn by Zeb, the decks feature 15 original portraits of women who changed the world. Zach also serves as the minority leader in the Iowa State Senate.
