16-year-old Liberty male arrested for two armed robberies

LIBERTY, NY — On Sunday, December 18, the Village of Liberty Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery of a liquor store on South Main Street.

Responding officers learned that a masked individual had entered the liquor store, brandished a knife, and demanded the employee give him money from the cash register. The employee then armed himself with a pair of scissors and prepared to defend himself. The masked individual then stole multiple bottles of wine and fled the location.

Village of Liberty Police Officers and Detectives immediately began investigating the incident and within three hours identified, located and arrested the suspect at his residence. The 16-year-old was taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers and was charged with robbery in the 1st degree and tampering with physical evidence, felonies, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, resisting arrest, menacing in the 2nd degree and petit larceny, all misdemeanors.

As a result of the investigation, the 16-year-old was also charged with an armed robbery that had occurred on September 22. On that date Village of Liberty Police had responded to the area of Ontario Street for a report of an individual being robbed with a handgun. Responding officers learned that an individual had been threatened by an unknown male with a handgun and had a quantity of marijuana stolen from him. The 16-year-old was additionally charged with a second count of robbery in the 1st degree, a felony and petit larceny, criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree, menacing in the 2nd degree and petit larceny all misdemeanors. The 16-year-old was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court by the Honorable Judge Troy Johnstone. In accordance with “Raise the Age” legislation, he was released on his own recognizance and ordered to appear in the youth part of county court at a later date.
