Leonard L. Martin, of Roanoke, VA and formerly of Narrowsburg, NY and Pipersville, PA passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024. He was the son of the late Edward and Helena Martin and was born November 3, 1924 in Vestal, NY.
Leonard is survived by his daughter Kathleen Robertson and her partner Peter Krupski of Roanoke, VA; son-in-law Robert Barber of Warrington, PA; two granddaughters: Jennifer Conicello and her husband Chad of Doylestown, PA and Kathleen Ordile and her husband Greg of Furlong, PA; and five great-grandchildren: William, Samuel and Evelyn Conicello and Annaliese and Christopher Ordile; as well as several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. He is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude; his daughter, Barbara Barber; and his sister, Arlene Martin, PhD.
Leonard served three years in the Army Air Force as a navigator-bombardier in World War II with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He also served two years in the National Guard. He attended the University of Minnesota for his early Air Force training and St. John’s University in New York after his discharge from service. He was awarded his Bachelor of Arts degree at Syracuse University in 1949. After working as a research chemist for a year, he returned to Syracuse to earn his Master of Science degree in education in 1951. While at the universities, Leonard took part in athletics, winning numerals in baseball and track. He accepted a position as a mathematics and science instructor at Narrowsburg Central School in 1951. He coached baseball at the school and had championship teams for many years. Leonard retired in 1986 after teaching 35 years.
Leonard always enjoyed sports, and upon retirement became an avid golfer. He loved the outdoors and working in his garden. Even with his love of candy and ice cream he remained physically fit his entire life, enabling him to reach the milestone of becoming 100 years of age.
Leonard was devoted to his family and his faith and enjoyed time spent in these endeavors.
The family would like to thank the staff at Our Lady of the Valley and Good Samaritan Hospice for the care they provided him.
A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Nazareth Roman Catholic Church in Roanoke on November 13. Interment will be on a later date in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
