Ernest W. Bielfeld was born on September 5, 1934, in the Bronx, NY, and later made his home in Narrowsburg, NY. He passed away on September 10, 2026, at Ellen Memorial Nursing Home in Honesdale, PA, just five days after celebrating his 92nd birthday surrounded by his family.
Ernst was truly one of a kind and lived a long and memorable life. In his younger years, he loved spending his summers in Montauk, NY, a place that always held special memories for him. A gifted athlete, Ernest was also an accomplished world-class speed skater.
Ernest proudly enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he met and married Hilde, the love of his life. Following his military service, Ernest went on to build a long career with the Daily News.
Ernest had a personality all his own. He was spirited, quick-witted, and always kept his family on their toes. He had a way of making his presence known wherever he went, but underneath it all was a man who loved his family deeply and always meant well. He enjoyed simple pleasures in life, especially a good cigar, and rarely missed an opportunity to take a picture. His camera was never far away, and thanks to him, his family has countless photographs capturing the people, places, and moments that meant the most to him. He left his family with a lifetime of stories, laughter and memories that will continue to be shared for generations.
Ernest also had a way of expressing himself that his family will never forget. Whether something was “superlative,” “terrific,” or simply deserved one of his unforgettable “WOWs,” you always knew exactly how Ernest felt. Those familiar words, along with his humor and larger-than-life personality, will continue to bring smiles to his family for years to come.
Ernest was predeceased by his beloved wife, Hilde, and his son Peter, who was lost on September 11, 2001. There is comfort in knowing that after so many, they are together again.
He is survived by his son Roger Bielfeld and wife Maryann, and his daughter Barbara Branda and her husband Dominic. He was a proud grandfather to Ashley, Alex, Dominic, Nicholas, Sara, Brittany and Peter. He was a cherished uncle to Anne Browning, Eddie Johannes and John Johannes, along with their children.
Ernest lived 92 memorable years and left his family with countless stories, laughs, photographs and expressions that were uniquely his. In Ernest’s own words, it was quite simply “superlative.”
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date at St. Francis Xavier Church in Narrowsburg, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Ernest’s life. Details will be announced at a later time.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home of Barryville, 3412 Rte. 97 in Barryville, NY, 845/557-8010.
