GRAHAMSVILLE, NY – Records are a thing to be made in sports.

Win, lose or call it a draw, it all gets jotted down in the scorebook. Or in some cases, becomes the stuff of legend in high school sports.

On Tuesday, March 4, the home team Lady Bears of Tri-Valley (15-4) took to the hardwood against the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (11-7), and at the final buzzer posted a 40-11 win in the Class B Section IX girls varsity semifinal.

Of note is the rather astounding stat that all the Sullivan West points were posted from the free-throw line—no “two’s,” nary a three-pointer, all from the free-throw line.

It was almost like someone had nailed a lid on the rim, or jinxed their shots to the net. Perhaps a home-team hoodoo put a spell on the visitors.

After a rather lackluster start on both sides of the fence, Tri-Valley outpaced their opponents in all frames: 7-2, 10-0, 7-5 and 16-4.

Leading scorers for the Lady Bears: Jenna Carmody (11 points); Avery Carrier (9, including a three-pointer); Allison Chevalier (7, including a three-pointer); and Jordan Dymond (7).

Sullivan West: Makala Chevalier (4 three-pointers at 4/4), Ella Herbert (4 three pointers at 4/9), Sam Hellerer (2 three-pointers at 2/2) and Skye Cruz (1 three-pointer at 1/2).

As a prime example of the positive spirit in local high school sports, each time a Sullivan West bucketeer stepped up to the free-throw line, her teammates on the bench cheered her on to make the shots.

Stats from the free-throw line: Tri-Valley 6/8 (75 percent) and Sullivan West 10/17 (58 percent).
