LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Agnes Van Put, at 108, would have been proud.
For more years than this sports scribbler can recall, Agnes was a regular feature at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum (CFFCM) during its annual open house in celebration of the start of the trout fishing season in the Empire State.
This year, the legendary supporter of fly fishing couldn’t attend, but her famous culinary recipes made their annual appearance on Saturday, April 5. This was thanks to Laura Colangelo, the center’s new director of operations, who created her chicken ball soup, while Judy Van Put whipped up Agnes’s famous traditional vegetable beef barley and split pea with ham.
As an added tasty treat, the center also served Agnes’s rum cake.
Other events during the center’s 2025 opening day celebration included “Meet Your Maker: The Mike Canazon Catskill Cane Revival” at the Roscoe Central School; demonstrations of the art of fly-tying by guest fly-tiers Tom Mason, John Apgar and Phil Street; and in cooperation with the Livingston Manor Chamber of Commerce, a Trout Town Treasure Hunt.
The CFFCM is located at 1031 Old Rte. 17.
For information about the museum, which is open Friday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., call 845/439-4810 or email office@cffcm.com.
