SUNY Sullivan touts NJCCA ranking

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — SUNY Sullivan’s undefeated Men’s Basketball team is the new number one-ranked team in the nation in today’s NJCCA Division II Men’s Basketball rankings. It is the first number-one national ranking for the Generals since joining Division II in 2018.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment and just one step closer to the goals that we set the day we went to division two in the fall of 2018,” said SUNY Sullivan Director of Athletics & Recreation and Dean of Student Development Services Chris DePew.

The Generals, off to an 8-0 start this year, have been led by sophomore guard Jay Alvarez, who is averaging 26.1 points per game and earned Mid-Hudson Conference Athlete of the Week honors in November. The #1-ranked Generals will take on #7-ranked SUNY Orange Tuesday night at 7 pm in the Frank Gerry Fieldhouse on the SUNY Sullivan campus.

Tuesday night’s battle between two local nationally ranked teams helps kick off SUNY Sullivan’s 2022 Holiday Toy and Food Drive. The “A Night of Giving” event also includes a 5 pm matchup between Fallsburg and Monticello high school boys' varsity basketball teams.

“This will be a fun evening celebrating the Generals #1 ranking and a great opportunity to support our students with young families,” said DePew. Anyone who donates a new unwrapped today and/or a non-perishable food item will receive a ticket to the halftime raffle. Each person will receive one ticket per item. Tickets (cash only) to the event are $3 for adults and $1 for students and seniors. Admission is free for children under 5 and SUNY Sullivan students with a valid ID.
