Established in August 2022, the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project is a group of locals, artists and historians dedicated to commemorating the history of the Borscht Belt, an era in American Jewish life, American culture and Catskill history. Its mission is the creation of a large-scale historic marker trail that permanently cements the famed era in its physical place while paying tribute to its legacy. Enhanced by photographs and QR codes, when complete the 20-marker trail will be united by a self-guided audio driving tour.

Saturday, May 24: Historic marker dedication at 3 p.m. at the Ellenville Library, 40 Center St. Reception to follow at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m., The Common Good (119 Canal St.) will host an engaging illustrated lecture on Ellenville’s Borscht Belt history, titled “Borscht Belt Reborn: Art, History, and the Ellenville Legacy,” featuring photographers Isaac Jeffreys and Marisa Scheinfeld. The event will also offer themed cocktails and a book and print signing.

Other markers will be dedicated on July 17 in Loch Sheldrake, August 23 in Woodbourne and October 5 in Parksville.

The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) serves as the arts council for Sullivan County. The DVAA presents year-round programs in the visual, performing and community arts, and it provides arts resources for a county- and valley-wide constituency of artists, arts groups and the general public. Many events are held at the Tusten Theatre.
The organization is responsible for annual events such as the Big Eddy Film Festival, Riverfest and the Deep Water Literary Festival.

Artist Bobby Abate is exhibiting “Big Bad” until June 22 in the Alliance Gallery. “Coffee and Conversation” with the artist will be held Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at the arts alliance.

“Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History was founded by former Sullivan County Historian James W. Burbank, and opened in 1957… [It] was not a fort in the military sense, but was designed as a replica of the stockade that had been known as the ‘lower fort’ of the Cushetunk settlement.” It is a living-history museum with “authentic, immersive programming.”
The following is a selection of the many activities at Fort Delaware. Most events take place in the event tent behind the fort. Events are free of charge and open to the public.

Saturday, August 9: The SMF collaborates with A Single Bite to offer a dinner at 6 p.m. on the SMF premises at the Sunset Concert Pavilion, followed by a performance featuring pianist Sara Davis Buechner at 8 p.m.

The museum houses the Sullivan County Historical Society, which preserves and presents the history of Sullivan County. (It also houses the Frederick Cook Society.) As a cultural center, the building offers space for events that showcase the county’s artistic heritage.
Coming up:
Saturday, June 7: The Sullivan County Historical Society is planning an Author and Illustrator Book Fair, to be held at the museum in Hurleyville, noon to 4 p.m.
All writers participating live in the county, have lived there, or have written about it. Authors include Nancy Bachana, Lily Barrish Lerner, Nancy Bilyeau, Nancy Hackett, Pedro Tweed, Hope Blecher, Mark Kramer, Kim Simons, John Conway, Roslyn Bernstein, Bizzy Coy, Gordon Gilbert, Diane Houghtaling, Kristin Kandibo, William and Julie Rozar, Sally Gladden, Jack Luster and Ken Shaw.
The event is free of charge, and each author will have copies of their books for purchase and signing.

Sullivan Public is a community art space, a store and a place to gather. Classes are held for adults and children, and events are hosted to nurture and grow the community.

Saturday, May 24: Pottery workshop for adults. Learn pottery and make cases for springtime flowers in the ceramic studio, 1 p.m.
Sundays: Ceramics classes for kids aged three to 14, 10 a.m.

Sunday, June 8: Town-wide clothing swap

Performance begins at 7:30 p.m and it is preceded by a pre-concert chat at 6:30 p.m. Takes place at Catskill Art Space.
