Tusten Theatre goes DVAA retro

Posted

The other night, feeling a little overwhelmed by the state of the world, I wanted to lose myself in a more carefree time. So, I headed to the Tusten Theatre in Narrowsburg, NY to see “All the President’s Men,” part of the DVAA’s Retro Cinema Series. I was instantly transported to 1972, the era of platform shoes, macrame and “Brandy, You’re a Fine Girl” by Looking Glass. A time when the country was deeply divided by a senseless war, presidential scandal and political polarization.

Thank goodness nothing like that will happen again, but in honor of the DVAA’s 50th anniversary, Retro Cinema will! Once a month, on rotating Thursday nights at 7 p.m. from June to November of this year, the arts alliance will be showing films made in 1976, the year of its founding. Feather your hair, put on a DY-NO-MITE T-shirt, grab a Tab and head over.

Tickets cost $15, with a discount for DVAA members. The schedule, specific dates and a list of featured films can be found at www.delawarevalleyartsalliance.org/retro-cinema.

For those who prefer to cut this article out and post it on the fridge, here are the highlights and broad strokes:

June 11, “A Star is Born.” The Barbra Streisand with a tight-perm version. “The Queen Bee” herself, in one of her most “Evergreen” films. This film has “Everything”! Want to understand my song title allusions? Head to the Tusten Theatre.

July 2 will offer “Logan’s Run,” featuring a world in which people are youthenized when they turn 30. A concept that I found a lot more fun before I turned 29. Celebrate this film, surely a favorite of health insurance companies everywhere.

October 1 will be validating for those of you who never went to prom, when “Carrie” hits the screen like a bucket of blood. You’ll leave the theater knowing that bullying is almost as bad as underestimating someone with telekinesis and a breaking point. Grab a tux or a maxi, empire-waisted dress and a corsage and get to the Tusten Theatre.

And finally on November 5, celebrate your decision to leave New York City by watching “Taxi Driver.” The perfect tonic for any lingering midterm election stress, it lets you transport yourself to a Manhattan so gritty even the rain looks dirty. Rumor has it that DVAA founder Elaine Giguere will be working the snack bar with a streetwise aggression, taking her sweet time waiting on people and asking customers, “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?”

DVAA Retro Cinema. Monthly rotating on Thursdays. 7 p.m. At the Tusten Theater, 210 Bridge St., Narrowsburg. $15 admission, with discounts for DVAA members.
