Spring will come and so will happiness, after a little work

Narrowsburg, spring is here!

In addition to the budding trees, blooming flowers and that stubborn pile of icy snow that refuses to melt, that means work. A well-run home has a few extra items on the ol’ to-do list.

To ease the tension between every couple that owns a house together, or parents foolish enough to ask a kid to wash a window, the River Reporter staff thought it might be a good idea to start the discussion externally in the hope of delaying family arguments until someone has a little too much to drink at Easter brunch.

Does that just happen to my family? Great. Now I’m feeling vulnerable.

Here are a few things to consider getting done before it’s time to start mowing the lawn and mulching the flower beds.

Speaking of which, I have the number of a great gardener.

Springtime to-dos

Most experts suggest that spring tasks focus on reversing winter damage and preparing for warmer weather.

Start by cleaning gutters, inspecting the roof for leaks, servicing the HVAC system, and checking exterior caulking.

Inside, deep clean by washing windows, cleaning behind appliances, and auditing safety devices like smoke detectors. Outside tasks include repairing lawn equipment, cleaning decks and preparing garden beds.

Tired yet?

Here are some of the hows and whys.

Clean gutters by removing leaves, pine needles and sludge that built up during the winter. This will help avoid leaks during rainstorms and hopefully increase the lifespan of your roof.

While you’re at it, inspect your roof. Check for missing, loose or damaged shingles, and look for leaks or water stains in the attic. Sweep metal roofs as best you can.

Inspect the foundation of your home for cracks. Wash dirt and mildew from the siding and put screens in place to open windows without insect intrusion. Take advantage of that brisk spring air!

Check on and possibly replace caulking and sealants. Re-caulk or add weatherstripping as needed to keep pests out and improve efficiency.

You’re not done.

Pressure wash, clean, and stain or seal wooden decks and concrete driveways.

Find time to wash windows and inspect screens for holes.

Deep clean carpets, rugs and mop floors; wash baseboards and door frames.

Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and wipe down walls to remove winter dust.

Clean refrigerator coils, vacuum dryer vents, and deep clean the oven and dishwasher. Replace filters and schedule a professional tune-up for the AC system.

Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing batteries if necessary.

Check for leaky hoses and pipe connections, and ensure the water heater is in good condition. Open outdoor hose bibs so crocus springing up gets water as needed.

And once all that is done, get your hammock out of winter storage, lovingly place it in a shady spot in your yard and fall asleep listening to birdsong.
