KENOZA LAKE, NY — In a repeat of the old story, the turtles beat the hares during the 11th annual Turtle Trot 10K and 5K races held on Saturday, July 12. The races were held in honor of race director April Rutledge’s father Doug Ackermann, who passed away due to pancreatic cancer, and her cousin Brenna Darling, who died too young.
“After their passing I knew that I wanted to do something to help others that have to go through similar difficult situations,” Rutledge said later.
“With my love for running, it only seemed fitting to start a race to raise money to help local families going through life threatening illnesses. All money raised goes into the Doug Ackermann and Brenna Darling Memorial Fund that is set up with the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan and is then dispersed to families who apply for help.”
The course, part of the Orange Runners King and Queen of the Mountain series, was described as being “gorgeous staged on Kenoza Lake [and] will invigorate you.” It invited participants to “appreciate the beauty of the country… join us for a change of pace and a day in beautiful Sullivan County.”`
The race was assembled at the Kenoza Lake Volunteer Fire Station, and attracted 59 participants in the 5K event, 47 for the 10K, and 12 folks signed up for the 5K walk.
