LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — In a historic milestone for New York high school athletics, Coach Ron Bauer has officially become the winningest coach in Section IX history, capping off a legendary six-decade career that has defined excellence in sports education, leadership, and mentorship.

The varsity football win over Ellenville on September 27 cinched this prestigious title with win number 216.

With over 59 team titles, 33 winning seasons and numerous Section IX championships, Coach Bauer’s career now stands as the gold standard for high school coaching in the Northeast.

Coach Bauer’s coaching career reaches back to 1966, when he began teaching at Delaware Valley Central School. Over the years, he built and led successful athletic programs at Jeffersonville-Youngsville and ultimately Sullivan West.

Beyond wins and titles, Coach Bauer is celebrated for his ability to mentor young athletes into successful adults. Under his leadership, athletes have achieved significant accomplishments. Many of his former athletes credit him with being a life-changing influence.

Known for his disciplined and purposeful coaching philosophy, Coach Bauer emphasized preparation, mental toughness and personal growth. He often reminded his athletes, “If you’re in shape—physically and mentally—you don’t break. If you get knocked down, you get back up.”

His old-school values, paired with a deep understanding of athlete development, created a culture of excellence that defined Sullivan West athletics. “This record is more than a number—it represents a lifetime of integrity, dedication and impact,” said Kurt Buddengaen, Sullivan West athletic director. “Coach Bauer’s legacy will live on through every student-athlete he’s inspired and every team he’s guided to success.”

Coach Bauer’s name will forever be etched in the legacy of Section IX sports—a lasting symbol of excellence, mentorship and the true spirit of high school athletics.
