WHITE PLAINS, NY — Edward "Jake" Lang, a former Sullivan County resident and Honesdale High School student who was recently arrested for his alleged role in the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol Building, will remain in detention following his first court appearance.

Prior to his arrest by the FBI, Lang had posted numerous photos and videos of himself to his various social media pages, proudly documenting his attendance of the pro-Trump demonstration which led to the storming of the Capitol. According to an affidavit filed by special agent LaNard Taylor—among other charges—Lang is accused of using a deadly or dangerous weapon against law enforcement, which can carry a sentence of up to 20 years.

Lang's first court appearance dealt mostly with logistical issues. Since Lang was arrested at his home in Newburgh, NY, the law required him to first appear in the Southern District Court of New York in White Plains, but he'll need to be transferred to the District of Columbia for further proceedings.

At the initial appearance Tuesday, January 19, Magistrate Judge Andrew Krause ordered Lang's transfer from New York's Southern District to Washington D.C. Due to COVID-19 complications, however, it could be weeks before U.S. Marshals are able to get Lang to Washington.

Lang won't be getting out on bail before then. He and his attorney Steve Metcalf consented to the government's request for Lang to remain detained for now; he'll be able to seek bail at some point in the future.

Lang's attorney was not immediately available for comment.
