How to manage manure

HONESDALE, PA — Penn State Extension is offering two Manure Management Essentials workshops this summer to help farmers and agricultural professionals improve manure management practices, maximize nutrient value and protect natural resources through practical, hands-on learning.

Each workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at working farms and will feature demonstrations tailored to each host operation. Participants will gain real-world experience with manure collection, storage, application, spreader calibration and safety practices while learning how these activities relate to manure and nutrient management plans. Attendees will also receive updates from local conservation district staff.

Workshop dates and locations

Tuesday, July 21—Mignerey Farm, Beech Grove Road in Honesdale

Tuesday, August 4—Bowman Brothers Farm, New Enterprise

During the workshop, participants will learn about:

Proper manure management practices

Spreader calibration

Tarping and manure storage procedures

Timing and placement of manure application

Spreader safety

Updates to manure and nutrient management plans (visit extension.psu.edu/programs/nutrient-management/manure)

The program is designed for:

Farmers who spread manure

Farmers with manure or nutrient management plans

Agricultural conservation professionals

Manure haulers and brokers

Registration costs $15 per person, and advance registration is highly encouraged.
