Easing the transition to high school

WAYNE COUNTY, PA  — If you have a child who will start high school in a few years, there’s something to help make that a little easier.

Penn State Cooperative Extension is running a PROSPER program in Wayne County. Designed to strengthen families, build youth skills and reduce substance abuse, the program is open to all families with kids aged 10 to 14 in Western Wayne, Wayne Highlands and Wallenpaupack school districts.

Participants will learn to set positive goals and ways to resist peer pressure. They’ll learn to manage emotions and stress, and practice communication skills.

Parents and caregivers will learn how to help their teen make the move to high school, and much more.

PROSPER is free and includes a meal. Childcare is available for young children.

To learn about PROSPER in Wayne County, call the Penn State Extension Office in Honesdale at 570/253-5970 ext. 4110.

Sullivan Bar Association scholarship recipients

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Kevin J. Feeney and Lorna Bragg have been awarded this year’s Ira Jay Cohen Scholarship.

Kevin  Feeney is a 2021 graduate of Roscoe High School.  While at school, he completed college courses and played varsity sports. He’ll attend SUNY Sullivan this fall, and intends to go into public law with an emphasis on forensics.

Lorna Bragg is a 2021 graduate of Tri-Valley High School.  She will be attending Northeastern University in the fall, majoring in Mathematics and Political Science.  She hopes to continue on to law school, she says, and to use her career to make a difference in her community.

The scholarship was established in 2016 to honor the memory of Ira Jay Cohen, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and member of the bar association.  He served as a public defender, county attorney and county treasurer.
