LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — “It’s hard to watch as a mom,” said Christina Hubert, mother of Sullivan West Bulldogs star running back Alec Hubert. She was taking photos along the sidelines during the varsity 8-Man Section IX Div1 football playoffs between the home team (8-1) and the Bombers of Pine Plains/Rhinebeck (2-5).
It was all happening under the lights on Friday, November 1.
While not taking pics to support her son’s team, Hubert teaches Spanish at the high school, and over the years has watched her son and several of his teammates develop on the gridiron, first playing the hard-hitting sport as Red Dogs in Fremont before moving up through the ranks to varsity.
“I just like supporting the kids, and to see them on the field is pretty amazing,” she said.
What’s it like to watch her son, now a junior, who when not racking up yardage on offense is a linebacker on defense? Hubert replied, “It’s really a physical sport; it’s hard to watch as a mom!”
If she’s nervous about watching Alec play football, Christina Hubert didn’t shy away from the question. “It’s a contact sport, and the sounds you hear on the sidelines are a lot different from what you hear in the stands.”
In Friday’s matchup, the Bulldogs dominated the Bombers, taking the brass ring 68-20. Alec Hubert posted five touchdowns, with a total of a game-leading 114 yards on 7 carries into the defensive line.
The Dawgs proved they were intent on winning, as they dominated the Bombers 42-12 in the first frame, and added another 6-point TD in the second period to take a 48-12 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the third period, it was all Sullivan West as they added another 14 points to the tally. In the final frame, it was SW 6, PPR 8.
Offense highlights for the Bulldogs
