LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — You win some, you lose some. It’s all up to a roll of the dice in a game of chance.
In summing up the varsity girls’ soccer match between the visiting Eldred Lady Yellowjackets (5-3) and the home team Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West (2-10) on Saturday morning, October 5, ‘jackets first-year coach Kevin Moscatiello said, “We traded a lot of chances in the beginning of the game. We had chances; they had chances.”
But as the game evolved under sunny early-fall skies, the Lady Yellowjackets drew first blood in the opening frame as Olivia Gonzalez scored at 9:23, and in the second half, Victoria Ryman “beat the keep” at 30:53 to win the game 2-0.
“The second goal gave us a little breathing room,” said Moscatiello. “The game was very competitive on both sides.”
Megan Brockner, third-year helmswoman of the Lady Bulldogs booters, said of the season, “I think we have an outstanding, hard-working group of girls, a young team, so we’re trying to build from the ground up.”
“Every game we see improvement, and they’re working together harder… What we started this year, we’ll continue to build upon.”
The Lady Bulldogs field a six-pack of seniors (Arienna Hinkley, Karli Kessler, Ryann McElroy, Brooke Nunnari, Mary Schroeder and Katelynn Smith) and are led by captains Nunnari and junior Gracyn Halloran.
Eldred’s Alexis Fredericks is the squad’s only senior, while the team fields a trio of 11th-grade captains: Olivia Gonzalez, Avery Moscatiello and Tabitha Smith.
