SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Are you over 45, with a clean license, and want to help our seniors?
Or maybe you’re a senior yourself and have a little time on your hands?
The Sullivan Volunteers (SV) program, operated through the county’s Office for the Aging, offers multiple ways to give back to your community.
Can you help?
First of all, drivers needed
Currently, there is an urgent need for volunteer medical transportation drivers, SV wrote in the latest issue of the Monthly Hoot, the county’s newsletter from the aging office.
“Our program needs caring volunteers to drive older adults to their medical appointments. Our drivers are screened, background checked and fingerprinted to ensure the safety of our clients.”
Volunteers help on a flexible schedule and mileage reimbursement is provided.
If you enjoy driving and want to learn more about this rewarding program, call 845/807-0255.
And if you want to help in other ways
SV has a long list of places around the county to share your talents—or pick up a new skill.
There are libraries, including Sunshine Hall in Eldred. You could deliver food to the homebound. There are historical societies and Radio Catskill. Consider thrift shops or hospice! (But if you can drive, do think first about taking people to their medical appointments.)
The two newest volunteer sites are:
Mamakating Environmental Education Center (MEEC), 762 South Road, Wurtsboro
MEEC is an active environmental center located within the Bashakill Wildlife Area that supports history and environmental education. Assistance is needed in the areas of fundraising, bookkeeping, gardening, festivals and programs.
Sullivan County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCSPCA), 104 Rock Hill Dr., Rock Hill
An independent animal rescue organization that focuses on finding quality forever homes for adoptable animals. Assistance is needed with light cleaning, answering phones, taking messages, assisting with events, fundraising and socializing adoptable animals.
Volunteers are so important
“Our volunteers are truly the heartbeat of many nonprofit agencies,” SV said. “Sullivan Volunteers connects volunteers with local nonprofits that are addressing critical community needs, including home-
delivered meals and medical transportation for our senior population.”
You choose how you want to serve and where; you choose how much time to give.
If you have a few hours to spare, enjoy helping others, and would like more information on how you can get started, call the program at 845/807-0255.
