Wallenpaupack shoreline gets a cleanup

LAKE ARIEL, PA — Every five years, Lake Wallenpaupack’s water levels are lowered, revealing a hidden shoreline along the historic Wallenpaupack Creek. Over time, this submerged landscape collects discarded fishing line, broken glass and other debris that can harm fish, wildlife and the lake’s delicate ecosystem, Lacawac Sanctuary said.

This year’s cleanup will take place Friday, October 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up by that morning.

“Now is our chance to make a difference!” a press release reads. “Join Lacawac Sanctuary and our conservation partners for a special volunteer shoreline cleanup! Together, we’ll explore this rarely seen landscape, remove harmful debris and help protect Lake Wallenpaupack for generations to come.”

Participants will meet at the William E. Chatlos Environmental Education Center on Lacawac Road. A one-mile hike on the Big Lake Trail leads to the exposed shoreline, followed by a volunteer cleanup.

Bring sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing and a willingness to get one’s hands dirty. Gloves, buckets and trash bags will be provided.

Families are welcome, but parents should be aware that the rocky shoreline may contain broken glass and discarded fishing hooks. Children must be closely supervised.
