TOWN OF THOMPSON, NY — There are two new reasons to get out and explore the Town of Thompson this fall, and both are completely free. The town has launched a new Geocache Adventure and installed new Clio history signage at Thompson parks and at the town hall.
“Thompson has so much to explore, from our beautiful parks to the history found throughout our community,” said town supervisor Scott Mace. “These two new programs give families, residents and visitors a reason to get outside, discover somewhere new and maybe learn something they didn’t know about Thompson along the way. Best of all, both are free and can be enjoyed at your own pace.”
Find all six
The town’s new Geocache Adventure in Thompson features six hidden caches spread among four town locations: Thompson’s three parks and the town hall. Using coordinates and clues provided in the town’s geocache adventure guide, participants can use their smartphone’s GPS to search for each hidden cache. The guidebook is free and can be picked up at the town hall, 4052 Rte. 42, or in the town hall cache, if the town hall is closed. There will be a clue posted on Facebook as to where the town hall cache is located.
The adventure was designed to be approachable for families and first-time geocachers. Caches are no more than a half-mile from any parking area.
Each cache contains a hole punch that participants can use to mark their guidebook. Find all six caches, complete the guide and bring it to the Thompson Town Hall to receive a special sticker. It’s an easy way to add a little adventure to a fall afternoon while discovering some of the town’s parks and public spaces.
Thompson parks are open year-round from dawn until dusk, making the Geocache Adventure something residents and visitors can enjoy throughout the seasons.
Discover the stories around you
Visitors to Thompson’s parks and the town hall will also notice new signage connecting them with Clio, a free digital-history platform that helps users explore historic places and stories nearby. It can be accessed online at www.theclio.com/entry/179724 or via the Clio app.
Signs have been installed at all three Thompson parks as well as town hall and feature information about historically significant sites within and around Thompson.
Together, the Geocache Adventure and Clio project offer two new ways to experience Thompson this fall: one by searching for what’s hidden, and the other by uncovering the stories that have been here all along.
