Two Monticello men on probation arrested for felony assault following stabbing at Nelly’s Sports Bar

MONTICELLO — On Saturday March 7, 2026 at 12:48 A.M., members of the Village of Monticello Police Department with assistance from the Sullivan County Sheriff Office and NYSP, responded to a reported fight in progress at Nelly’s Sports Bar located at 456 Broadway.

Upon arrival of responding officers, blood was observed on the sidewalk. Officers learned that a male victim had been stabbed and then chased towards Lakewood Avenue. Monticello Police were then alerted that the victim was located on Bedford Avenue.

The victim was identified as a 48 year-old Liberty man and he had sustained multiple stab wounds. The victim was transported by Empress EMS to Garnet Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill and hospitalized with a punctured lung as a result of being stabbed.

As a result of an investigation, Village of Monticello Police have arrested the following two individuals:

Sam E. Reed, age 36, of Monticello charged with the felonies of Assault in the 1st degree, Assault in the 2nd degree and Criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree.

Daquan D. Staten, age 25, of Monticello charged in acting in concert with Reed with the felonies of Assault in the 1st degree and Assault in the 2nd degree.

Both defendants were arraigned in the Village of Monticello Justice Court before Judge Douglas Solomon. Reed was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail. Staten was remanded to the Sullivan Jail on $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bail bond and $200,000 partially secured bond. 

Reed is currently on US probation in White Plains due to a prior Federal felony drug and weapon convictions. Staten is also on probation in Sullivan County due to a prior felony weapons conviction.

The filing of an accusatory instrument is merely an accusation and every person arrested is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
