‘The aftercare I did not know I needed’

Monticello’s Oxford House can make all the difference to people in recovery

My name is Angela, and I am a grateful recovering addict. Six months ago, I came to Monticello, NY to get clean. Yes, you read that right: Monticello. You may not be aware, but Sullivan County has a blossoming recovery community. Not too long ago, an Oxford House opened here. It is where I reside today.

The Oxford House is a sober living home for recovering alcoholics and addicts. There are currently two male houses and one woman-and-child house. Unlike a halfway house with its paid staff, the Oxford House is run by its peers on a democratic basis. The residents are responsible for paying the rent and the bills, and for attending AA or NA meetings. It grants you independence while holding you accountable to do the right thing. The Oxford House has allowed me to become a responsible citizen of society once again.

For more than 30 years, I used drugs and alcohol. That is more than half my life. I did not know how to live any other way. Finally, when I reached my rock bottom, I surrendered and was admitted into a 30-day rehab. While in rehab, I learned about the Oxford House. I had a phone interview and was accepted right on the spot. I moved in a few days later and have lived here since.

There are no rules in the Oxford House, just guidelines—find a job, stay clean and pay your rent on time. We also ask you to get a sponsor and work the steps.

The Oxford House is the aftercare I did not know I needed. In the past, after my many attempts at rehab, I would always return to my hometown, finding myself right where I left, with the same “friends” using drugs. I needed something more. Something with the structure to keep me accountable, but at the same time allowing me to find myself. After so many years of addiction, I lost the person I used to be. With the sober support of the house and community, I am proud of the woman I have become.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, is homeless, or if you or they would just like further information, contact The Oxford House at 845/513-4333. You can also visit our national website at www.oxfordhouse.org.
