A recent article in the River Reporter titled “Local constables participate in ICE partnership program,” by Mark Casner and Liam Mayo, asks many important questions in a non-threatening, thorough and highly professional way.
What is the function of a constable, and how does that constable get involved with ICE?
Under Section 287(g) of the Immigration & Nationality Act, local law enforcement is supposed to “cooperate” with ICE. This wording seems purposely vague.
The authors of this article tried to clarify the roles of local participants by contacting different law enforcement offices in writing, but they got no responses of any kind.
Congratulations to the authors on their impressive effort and reporting.
