ROCK HILL, NY — On Monday, January 27, 2025, at approximately 7:45 am, a multi-car collision occurred on State Route 17 between Exit 108 and 109 in the eastbound travel lanes near Rock Hill.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies report that a driver traveling eastbound experienced severe sun glare and reduced their speed rapidly. The driver of a vehicle following behind also experienced the same sun glare and collided with the rear of the lead vehicle.

This set off a chain reaction that led to an additional 8 vehicles crashing at the scene. Multiple sheriff and state police units responded to the scene as well as the Rock Hill Fire Department.

Ambulances transported 6 victims to Garnet Sullivan Hospital in Harris and 4 victims to Garnet Orange in Middletown. A school van transporting students from the Sullivan West and Liberty school districts was involved in the pileup. The extent of any injuries was unknown.

During the emergency response, an additional 2 cars collided just west of exit 108 in the eastbound lanes. There were no injuries in that 2nd accident.

New York State DOT assisted at the scene as well as EMS units from Mountain Dale, Mamakating, Bethel, Empress, and Sullivan County EMS.

The investigation is continuing.
