LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY – “As a Veteran, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when a community comes together,” said Lauren Roman, M.D., project manager of the 2025 Sullivan County Veterans Festival & Stand Down. “Not just to say ‘Thank you,’ but to truly stand beside those who have served.”
Roman served as a battalion surgeon with the 4th Brigade of the 1st Armored Division in Iraq from 2009 to 2010, and since then has devoted considerable time and energy to working as a Veterans advocate in the local area.
According to Roman, the local festival “offers more than just a moment of recognition. It creates a space where Veterans can access real resources, from health and wellness services, to employment opportunities, surplus gear, warm meals and meaningful conversation… this day is designed with Veterans in mind.”
“It matters because many Veterans carry burdens quietly,” she continued. “The transition from military to civilian life can feel deeply isolating, even many years or decades after a Veteran has returned home. Asking for help is often difficult. Bringing services directly to Veterans in a welcoming, respectful and uplifting environment can make all the difference.”
“For me personally, this is not just another event—it is something I feel deeply connected to and support. Being seen, heard and honored is something every Veteran deserves. Watching Veterans walk away from the surplus tables with smiles and new gear, seeing children paint and color while parents connect with resources, and hearing the sweet sound of music performed with sincerity and love, are all moments that remind us of why this day matters so much.”
In previous years, the local Vet Fest was held at the Grahamsville Fairgrounds, but this year’s edition was convened on Saturday, September 27 at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse, located at SUNY Sullivan.
Billed as a “day of support, connection and celebration for our Veterans”, the event featured live music with Derek Stoner and Jesse Noren, free surplus gear, representatives from several Veterans’ services and support organizations, health and wellness resources, employment and job training opportunities, healing art activities, military-themed art, free food and deserts, and a kids corner.
The popular event even featured free “high and tight” haircuts by Marine Corps Veteran Jake Polick of First Stop Barber Shop in Lock Sheldrake, a master barber who specializes in “hot shaves, fades, tapers and line-ups.”
