NEWBURGH, NY — On September 10, troopers assigned to State Police Montgomery observed a 2005 Toyota traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 in the Town of Montgomery at a high rate of speed.
A trooper operating a marked State Police vehicle activated the emergency lights and attempted to stop the Toyota. The vehicle failed to comply, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued into the City of Newburgh, where it was subsequently terminated.
A short time later, officers from the Town of Newburgh Police Department located the Toyota and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver again failed to comply, resulting in a second pursuit. The pursuit traveled across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge into the Town of Fishkill and then back across the bridge into the Town of Newburgh. The pursuit ultimately came to a stop on Pierces Road in the City of Newburgh.
Officers from the Town of Newburgh took the driver, identified as Joseph Fleischer, 50, of Walden, NY, into custody.
Fleischer was arrested and charged with the following offenses:
Fleischer was arraigned on September 11, 2026, in the Newburgh Town Court Central Arraignment Part and was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail. Fleischer will remain in Orange County Jail pending a future court date.
