PENNSYLVANIA — After the loss of his mother, Jim—an older Pennsylvanian—found himself at a crossroads. The profound loss left him grappling with grief and loneliness, prompting him to seek new ways to enrich his life.

After receiving a tip to look into a senior center, Jim visited his local Area Agency on Aging (AAA), a decision that would alter the course of his life.

Jim was full of nerves for his first visit, but as soon as he saw a pool table in the building, he felt at ease. As he began to play, Krista Greer, executive director of Active Aging, Inc. in Crawford County, joined him.

This initial show of friendship inspired Jim to come back and keep making new friends, including Paula, Ashley and Patty, who took him under their wing and showed him true friendship.

As Jim continued returning to Active Aging, Inc., he began getting more involved with the programs the group offered. He attended bus trips, picnics and holiday parties. Now Jim comes in twice a week to enjoy lunch and socialize. In Jim’s own words: “I was lost. That place saved my heart.”

Pennsylvania’s AAAs play a pivotal role in fostering social engagement and supporting older adults in maintaining an active social life. AAAs offer social events and recreational activities, educational programs, technology training, transportation services and volunteer opportunities.

The Pike County Area Agency on Aging has multiple senior centers throughout the county, including Blooming Grove, Matamoras, Lackawaxen and Bushkill. We offer many different activities and events that are great for socialization, such as bingo, chair yoga, arts and crafts, exercise, dancing and more.

Make sure to check our monthly newsletter for updates on activities and events.

Visit www.p4a.org for more information on the services AAAs provide, and to find your local AAA.
