The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Liberty announces the arrest of Yassir Ali Mohamed Sharhan, age 40, of Rochester, Monroe County, New York, on drug-related charges.

Sharhan was charged with the following:

               • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 2nd Degree, a class A-II felony

               • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, Intent to Sell, a class B felony

               • Operating a Motor Vehicle Impaired by Drugs, 1st offense, an unclassified misdemeanor

The investigation began on April 15, 2026, at approximately 7:48 p.m., when troopers from State Police Roscoe initiated a traffic stop on a 2026 Kia traveling westbound on State Route 17 in the town of Rockland for a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Troopers interviewed the driver and sole occupant, Sharhan. During the investigation, it was determined that Sharhan was impaired by khat, a stimulant. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded approximately 432 grams of khat.

Sharhan was taken into custody and transported to State Police Liberty for processing without incident.

Sharhan was arraigned in the Town of Rockland Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail. Sharhan is scheduled to return to the Town of Rockland Court on April 21, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
