In 2024, Rob Bresnahan ran against Congressman Cartright and criticized him for not co-sponsoring legislation to prohibit members of Congress from trading stocks. That attack helped him squeak into office with just 50.8 percent of the vote.
Once in office, Bresnahan, in a stunning act of blatant hypocrisy, turned out to be one of the most prolific stock traders in Congress, making hundreds of trades worth millions of dollars in just his first few months in office.
In an interview with Wilkes-Barre station WILK, Bresnahan let it slip that he meets with his financial adviser to discuss what stock positions are coming up.
This is the kind of self-dealing that undermines public trust in politicians and their government.
I served in public office as a Republican from Bucks County for 24 years, including 12 years in Congress. During that time, I never engaged in trading stocks, nor did those of my colleagues whom I respected. In fact, when I chaired the Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation, I led the investigation that resulted in the conviction of Martha Stewart for insider trading.
When individuals with access to information that is not available to other stockholders use that non-public information to buy or sell stocks, it gives them an unfair advantage so they can profit at the expense of regular investors. Former Republican Congressman Chris Collins of New York was sentenced to 26 months in federal prison in January 2020 for insider trading.
I have called for Congressman Bresnahan to resign and to allow the people of the 8th Pennsylvania District to elect a representative they can trust to look out for their interests.
