Rally to mark International Workers’ Day

Posted

We Are One Sullivan will host a sidewalk rally on Friday, May 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the corners of Chestnut Street and North and South Main Streets in Liberty to commemorate International Workers Day.

May Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries that acknowledges labor struggles and achievements over the last two centuries, with workers advocating for and winning better working conditions.

These achievements were hard-fought and included the eight-hour workday, child labor laws, workplace safety laws and more.

As part of a National Day of Action to demand a worker-centered vision of America, the rally is a way for people to come together for an hour, to show support for a decent life for all families and workers, putting families before corporate profits and supporting democracy by standing up for freedom, fairness, and shared rights.

Inspired by unions, community organizations, and workers in Minnesota who came together in response to actions taken in their community by the Federal government, national May Day organizers, including many labor unions, have also called for a general strike on May 1 to withhold economic power by pledging “No work, no school, no shopping.”

Locally, organizers realize that actions such as this may not be possible for everyone, so we are encouraging people to act in ways that are achievable for them. “Small actions can add up if enough people take them,” said Anne Hart, one of the organizers. “In addition to holding this rally, we will let people know about what else they can do, which, when taken together, can impact billionaires’ bottom line.”

A core principle behind all May Day events is commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
